The 10th Anniversary Congress of Rosneft ecologists was held in Moscow. It was attended by over 300 managers and environmental specialists from 120 of the Company’s subsidiaries, as well as representatives of relevant government agencies and the professional community.
Achieving the environmental goals set out in Rosneft 2030 Strategy was the main theme of the Congress. Much attention was paid to synchronising the Company’s environmental activities with the objectives and national development goals set by the Russian President in his address to the Federal Assembly. Most of them have already been incorporated into the Company’s key documents and are being put into practice.
Rosneft has spent more than 440 billion roubles on environmental protection over five years, including more than 270 billion roubles on green investments and about 170 billion roubles on wastewater treatment, land reclamation and other environmental protection works. This has led to impressive results in improving the Company’s environmental performance: air emissions have been reduced by 25%, water discharges by 10% and the area of disturbed land by 14%. The corporate programme has remediated over 800 hectares of contaminated «heritage» land.
The ecologists exchanged practical experiences on the most topical environmental issue of the year — obtaining comprehensive environmental permits. According to data from the Russian Ministry of Energy presented at the Congress, the Company is the industry leader in terms of their receipt.
As usual, the topics of implementing the circular economy and using the latest environmental technologies and best practices in waste management were of particular interest. The participants discussed both the practical experience of implementing such projects in subsidiaries and the results of scientific research carried out by the Company’s own institute and by participants in scientific and practical conferences organised by the Company.
A special session was dedicated to Rosneft’s biodiversity conservation activities, which aim to achieve a cumulative positive impact on ecosystems in the regions of operation. In June this year, at the XXVII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Rosneft and the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources signed an agreement on cooperation within the framework of the Federal Project on Conservation of Biological Diversity and Development of Ecological Tourism.
By 2027, Rosneft and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment plan to carry out a number of research activities, including studies of the polar bear and its habitat, the wild reindeer population and the valuable bio-resources of the Yenisei River. Scientists and experts will also assess the condition of the wetlands, which are of international importance as waterfowl habitats and protected under the Ramsar Convention. These studies continue and build on the Company’s long-standing research and biodiversity conservation activities, including in the Arctic. Reports on biodiversity conservation projects in the Russian Middle Belt, including the conservation of the white-tailed sea eagle in the Samara region, were also presented at the Congress.
As part of interactive communication with representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Centre for Environmental Industrial Policy, the Russian Environmental Operator, and the Federal Environmental Operator, the Company’s specialists received answers to questions on the reform of environmental legislation. In a special session, they discussed current practice in environmental disputes.
Subsidiary specialists were recognised for their contribution to solving environmental challenges. The results of the Wildlife 2024 corporate photography competition have been collated in the following categories: landscape, wildlife, nature and production, and young people’s care for wildlife.
Rosneft focuses on environmental education of young people, cultivating a careful attitude to nature in the younger generation. The winners of the Safety Through Children’s Eyes drawing competition were also awarded at the Congress. In total, more than 250 drawings were submitted by children of employees at the subsidiaries, and 12 entries made it to the final round.
